Seminars, Gatherings, Widgeous and Barcamp

Things have been rather quiet on the blogging front for me despite so many things happening lately…
Blog2u Seminar: Understand New Media and Its Impact
For starters, I went for Blog2U’s Understanding New Media and It’s Impact seminar last Wednesday. I won’t go into details(and I don’t have many pictures either) but I’ll tell you what I think they’re trying to do. Unlike the other players in the field, Blog2u‘s really not just looking to engage the bloggers but the new media players as a whole. What’s interesting is that they understand that this new media scene is really made up of not just the content creators and the advertisers in isolated chambers but a mesh of both. In fact, the series of events and seminars that they organise(not always public events) are aimed at educating both sides of the scene of the concerns that they all have.
While everyone has an opinion of how people should be engaged, I believe that what they’re doing is somewhat of value. As opposed to just having ‘fun’ events where bloggers just milk the agency of freebies, bringing knowledge to the table is definitely useful for the more serious bloggers. Hoping to see how their efforts in the new media scene unfold…
Ping.sg Lim Jiu Session
I don’t have much to say about this one because I basically came, said hi, talked a little and then had to leave. Just head on over to ping.sg and do a search for entries from the amazing people who went for it…
Gathering with Minor Peeps
On Sunday, I basically met up with Jason, Kevin, Xinyi, Corinne and Jake from the Minor in Entrepreneurship programme. It’s been such a long time since I met up with them and it’s really interesting to find out what they’re all up to. Millitary personnel, banker, stewardess, accountant. Jason’s going for his Masters programme too! Hopefully we’ll meet up again soon.
Preparing for Barcamp Singapore II
Something that I had initially agreed to do several months ago, I almost completely forgot that it was this week until I scheduled a dental appoint for today and saw this slot that said, “Barcamp.” Our core platform has more or less been built and reaching a point where I can almost say it’s ready for public demonstrations. I have some concerns about people not understanding what we do because we’re a platform and as with any other platform, the capabilities of Widgeous will only be realised when applications(built atop our platform) make use of the various features that we have.
So what’s going to happen tomorrow? Well, there’re basically 2 things I want to show the attendees tomorrow – What pet peeves we have and where we are now in solving that peeve. Truth is, every startup wants to conquer the world but we have to remain grounded to where we are. For anyone in any company that’s planning not just to make financial gain but also to change the way the world works, it’s important to realise that what you’re building is part of a bigger schema of things – and that you have be honest with where you are and where you see yourself fit into that big plan. After that, it’s going to be about producing consistent improvements and listening to the people that are in the same industry. This part about listening is the part I’ll have to be extra careful about because it’s something I haven’t had much experience in.
You can find out more about the event here.
Ok…need to prepare for presentation now…
