Ok, after I got the BlackBerry Bold, I haven’t really had time to play around with it’s data tethering capability(using it as a modem). So when I finally forced myself to figure it out, I realised one major problem – there’s very little help online about the actual settings. The few forum entries I found where largely for users on foreign carriers and the fewer still Singapore related ones were talking about settings for SingTel.
But today I called the M1 hotline and their BlackBerry technical support was fabulous!
So here, if you’re on MobileOne(M1) and you’ve been having the same problem looking for help, I’m going to share how you can actually do it for yourself:
1. Ensure that you have installed the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
2. Ensure you have sunsurf and MiWorld VAS pegged to your plan. Although the data comes with the BlackBerry Unlimited plan, you need the sunsurf Access Point if you’re going to use it as a modem.
3. Once you’ve ensure you got those two settled, go to Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Ports
Check to see that you have COM ports assigned to the “RIM Virtual Serial Port”
4. Now go to Start -> Control Panel -> Phone & Modem Options -> Modems
Check that the “Standard Modem” is assigned the same COM port no. as the RIM Virtual Serial Port that you checked in step (3)
5. Now select the “Standard Modem” and click “Properties”.
6. Go to the “Advanced” tab and in the “Extra Initialisation Commands” field, enter
+cgdcont=1,”IP”,”sunsurf”
7. Click “OK”
8. Now go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections and create a new connection.
9. When prompted for the “Network Connection Type” choose “Connect to the Internet”. Then click “Next”
10. When prompted “How do you want to connect to the Internet?” choose “Set up my connection manually”. Then click “Next”.
11. On the next screen, choose “Connect using a dial-up modem”. Then click “Next”
12. When prompted to select a device, select the “Standard Modem” that you configured earlier in step (5). Then click “Next”
13. When asked to enter a “Connection Name”. Just give it a name. This is for your own reference. Then click “Next”.
14. When prompted for the “Phone Number” enter
*99#
15. After that, you can leave the username and passwords blank. But if you want to set it up, you can also use the following details:-
username : 65
password : user123
16. There are 2 checkboxes, decide for yourself if you want to make it the default connection. I suggest you leave them unchecked. Then click “Next”
17. Decide if you want to create a shortcut on the desktop then click “Finish”
18. And you’re ready!
What Next?
19. Run your BlackBerry Desktop Manager and connect your BlackBerry Bold to your computer.
20. Double-click the connection that you just created and click “Dial”
21. If all goes well, you’re online!
Good Luck and have fun!
Miscellaneous
a. If you’ve been surfing around, a lot of forums have been listing “mobilenet” as the Access Point Name(APN), but the hotline informed me that that’s already outdated and that the present APN is “sunsurf”
b. If you’re intending to set up the TCP/IP APN settings in your BlackBerry Device, you should set it up as using “sunsurf” as well. That said, you should have no problems even if you did not input this setting.
c. You must have the step (2) checked properly. I apparently didn’t have those 2 options activated and I had problems streaming youtube videos, sending/receiving MMS-es and setting up the Bold as a modem. Apparently all these ‘streaming’ services requires access to the “sunsurf” access point and one can only do so if those services have been activated.
Hope this helps someone out there who’s been searching for the config details…
I’ve also set up the Bold to be able to do secure shell(SSH) but i’ll write that another time.
