My Communications Setup

While it’s debatable if being contactable 24/7 is a good thing, it’s what I’m trying to do right now. So I just wanted to share with you how I’m making that happen.

But first, let me make it clear that just because i’m contactable 24/7 doesn’t mean I’ll get back to you immediately. If I’m doing something more important than what you put in your message, i’ll chuck it away for later.

Anyway, emails. All emails get pushed to my BlackBerry Bold. As much as possible I’ll try to respond immediately but I’ll otherwise mark it for reply as soon as I get off a meeting or something.

Short Messages. This isn’t just SMS-es. It’s everything from Twitter, Facebook and SMS-es. I leave my twitter app(ubertwitter) running in the background so that any @ridz84 mentions as well Direct Messages gives me a notification. Facebook Wall messages and inbox messages do the same(Except that for FB, I don’t need the app to be running). SMS-es…well, that one you know how it works(you just need my number).

In short, if it’s a long message or if it has attachments, email me. Otherwise, if you have my number, SMS-es would work. And if you don’t, you can always just find me on facebook or twitter. If you’re trying to send me a private message and we don’t know each other, drop me a facebook message.

At night, however, when I need to sleep, my phone goes into bedside mode where basically nothing rings unless you’re on my special priority list that I’ve set up.

On my phone, I run only gTalk in the background unless I need to conserve battery. Once in a while I have MSN up(but don’t count on it).

Summary
Friends can do anything via all the channels i’m monitoring. But if you’re not on my ‘friends’ list yet, here’s a breakdown:-

Facebook – you can send me a private message.
Twitter – you can @ridz84 me and get my attention until i add you. After that you can DM me. I generally add anyone that mentions me unless your timeline shows me you’re a bot or a spammer.
Email – anything goes. But because I get lots of emails(and spam), I might take a while because i’m generally more careful when I reply to emails. (and being careful takes time ;p)

Of course, if it’s really really really urgent. Please. Just try calling me.
