Post-Google Hackathon 09

Patrick presenting some of the demos

I spent an entire day at SMU on Tuesday with U-zyn, Kahwee and U-Fong to attend this year’s Google Hackathon co-organised with e27. I was expecting a sort of a re-run of last year’s programme. I mean, the programme did state that they were, again, going to show OpenSocial and Map stuff(which was the focus lasty year too).

But I was pleasantly surprised. Unlike last year, which felt like a super long series of lectures with all the various partner’s demo-ing one after another till the cows came home(and went out again), this year they really did want people to ‘hack’. And while that caught us by surprise, we eventually did find something to create.

Basically in 3 hours, we created “The Base Is Right” – which is a play on the TV gameshow “The Price is Right”. It runs off the Google Base API. And it was quite fun building it really.

There were others who hacked away and presented their stuff too. You can check them here

I totally enjoyed the time spent there because it lived up to it’s name. They gave us time to hack. And even when the response was quiet and people started to leave…they still wanted us to hack.

And hack we did…at least those who stayed behind. :)

Thanks to e27 and the Google reps – Pamela, Stephanie and Patrick
