It took me about a week after Nicole Seah’s introduction to finally view her facebook page and watch the videos that were circulating on the Net. And as I see the constant updates that go on her page, I can’t help but compare it to that of Tin Pei Ling’s. Other than the obvious difference in the number of ‘fans’, I think TPL (and PAP) has much to learn when it comes to engaging people – the difference in tone is obvious between the two pages. Nicole Seah’s page attempts to create connections with people by using words/phrases like “I was asked today…” and “One last thing before I call it a night…” which allows people to relate to her as a person.
Contrast that with TPL’s page which is very much a regurgitation of issues and tons of picture uploads. In fact, while I did a quick search and realised that the word “you” and it was used only twice while Nicole Seah used it 17 times. It’s hard to feel like the candidate is talking to me if she’s not directing her updates at me.
I have quite a lot of faith in the technical capabilities of the PAP but I seriously think they need to learn to relate, engage and ultimately lead people.
Disclaimers : Like many of you, my interests lie with Singapore as a nation and support the idea of greater opposition representation. That said, I do think the opposition is not ready to be in control. I also think that there are some people calling for change may be too in love with the notion of making history than the actual benefits of change itself (NOTE: I am NOT saying that everyone suffers from this).
