Pandemic. A board game that requires you to cooperate with your friends to save the world from a pandemic outbreak. And definitely lots of thinking required to plan each game round to maximize each character’s abilities if you are planning to win the game. Somehow, the game mechanics does not favor the players unless you cooperate and plan out the game round. It is so much easier to lose the game than to win it.
Each player picks a character at the start, and each character has their own unique abilities. The basic idea of the game is to find the cure for each of the 4 colored virus. So there is one way to win the game but there are more than 1 ways to lose the game. The odds are definitely against the players, but it is not impossible to win though. Getting the hang of the game is simple enough, but midway through, if you have not started cooperating and planning with your fellow players, the virus is going to get out of hand with the randomness of the outbreak. You could only plan effectively for each game round, after which, the randomness kicks in at the end of each round.
This is one game that I would recommend to people who loves a challenge and cooperating with your fellow friends. But not as a party game.
Here’s what one of our fellow writers, Ivan Gn, has to say about the game
Pandemic is one of the very few board games which are truly cooperative and allow for players to contribute towards a common goal. The pick up is easy and game is simple to play for older players. There is sufficient random factors to allow for replays without the game becoming stale. But it is also this element of luck which makes the game really challenging. Having 4 or more players will help to make the game more manageable. There is a good balance of challenges which requires the players to work together and make trade offs to complete the game, usually within an hour.
