So a recent hunt for a pen for a friend ended up with me doing some research into fountain pens and eventually having me own this classy looking one – the Medium nib Pilot Capless (aka the “Vanishing Point” in the US markets). I got the one in matte black because it’s my favourite colour despite some online reviews on how the coating might stain/come off if not handled with care. Considering it’s my first relatively expensive pen, I think i’m going to be pretty careful with it haha.
What makes this pen line from Pilot interesting (but not necessarily unique to them) is that it doesn’t use a cap – resulting in somewhat of a cross between a ball point and fountain pen. The nib retracts and extends from the side of the clip which initially seems weird but is actually pretty smart because
- If you forget to retract the nib and clip it to your shirt, the nib points upwards limiting any ink leaks.
- since it’s a fountain pen, it’s orientation actually matters when you write so the clip actually helps guide your fingers into the right position.
I’ve used it for about a week now and i’m so in love with how smooth it is to write with it. It’s so smooth it’s tempting to just draw lines just to glide the pen over paper….
